Meets Tuesday Noon

Radisson Paper Valley

THUMBNAIL:  KEVIN EISMANN

Kevin grew up in Milwaukee.  His father taught him two lesions:  how to fight and the importance of education.  Kevin and his two brothers are the first Eismann’s who made it through high school and went on to college.  Kevin went to college for engineering then he went to law school and also got his MBA.  Thirteen years ago, he came to the Valley to work for McCarty Law.  He decided to start his own law firm, Epiphany Law, which is geared towards business law.  In a little over three years, the firm was grown to 6 attorneys.  Kevin and Linda have been married for about 16 years.  They have 5 boys ages 3-13.

GREAT LAKES WATER:

WHO HAS IT? WHO WANTS IT?

Patrick Planten, Water Engineering Department Manger at Short Elliott Hendrickson, Inc., told us some Great Lakes facts.  The Great Lakes contain 1/5 of all freshwater on earth which amounts to 6 quadrillion gallons. They contain 95% of the U.S. freshwater, the water volume could submerge the U.S. in 10 feet of water, only 1% of the lake water is renewed annually and since they are deep lakes they have a long turnover period.  Lake Superior, Huron and Michigan are at historic low levels.  Even though we have a tremendous amount of water in the Great Lakes, there is a major amount of concern over the water supply.  There will be water wars much like in the western part of the country.  The Great Lakes watershed is only twice as large as the lakes themselves.  The watershed encompasses 8 U.S. states and 2 Canadian providences.  Michigan is the only state completely within the Great Lakes Basin.  Diversions into and out of the basin are small relative to other inflows and outflows.  Inflows include precipitation, streamflow, diversions in and groundwater flow. Outflows include evaporation, diversions out and consumptive loss.  The greatest threats to the Great Lakes water are climate changes, large scale diversions, and in and near basin uses/abuses. If we treat water in the basin like a commodity, then federal and international law requires you to treat it as a commodity outside the basin as well.  Restrictions must preserve this resource rather than be used to gain economic advantage.  The biggest concern is that the fastest growing state populations (Arizona, Georgia, Colorado, Utah, etc.) are the ones that have a fixed supply of fresh water.  These states are also the ones that have the most electoral votes giving the Great Lakes states less political power to protect the water of the Great Lakes.

FOX CITIES ROTARY MULTICULTURAL CENTER

The Rotary Club of Appleton Board voted to commit up to $29,000 in funds to match gifts made to the Fox Cities Rotary Multicultural Center to reduce/eliminate the debt due to the renovation costs.  We are helping the Multicultural Center complete the project we helped them initiate as part of Rotary’s Centennial Celebration. If you would like to participate in this match, please make your checks payable to the Fox Cities Rotary Multicultural Center and specify that it is for debt reduction.  This matching program will end on March 31 or until the funds are used up.

ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarship applicants are being sought for the Rotary Club of Appleton’s Art Scholarship Program.  Through the program, up to $1,500 is awarded to one or more applicants seeking a degree or non-degree-related educational experience in his or her field of art.

Although there is no age limitation, candidates must demonstrate that the educational experience will prepare the artist to become a more successful practitioner.  To be eligible for a scholarship, the candidate must reside in the area served by the Rotary Club of Appleton, must be a practicing artist (teachers and students qualify) and must be planning to experience an education opportunity after May 23, 2008.

The scholarship application can be downloaded from: http://www.focol.org/aprotary/ or hard copy format from any local arts organization office; any questions can be directed to the Rotary Arts Scholarship Committee (kdreyer1@juno.com).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

·       We will be co-hosting (with Appleton West) a Group Study Exchange team from Sao Paulo, Brazil May 28-June 1, 2008.  If you would like to serve on the committee or be a host family, please contact Jay Drzewiecki at 734-2555.

·       The President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) will be held on March 7-8 for the 2008-2009 presidents of District 6220 and 6270.  Dick Calder is looking for 2 more volunteers to help at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel on March 7.  If you would like to help, please contact him at 739-7000.

·       Each year, the Rotary Youth Exchange students attend a summer trip to the east or west coast at their own expense.  Alek and Rejoice come from poor families who are unable to provide the $1,700 each to go on one of these trips.  Alek’s family had to take out a 2nd mortgage for him to come to Appleton and Rejoice won a South Africa Airlines contest for low income students.  Since the Board was unaware of their situations, the money is also not budgeted.  If anyone would like to help defer the cost to send Alek and Rejoice on one of these trips, please contact Kathy Dreyer or send your checks to:  Rotary Club of Appleton, P. O. Box 703, Appleton, WI 54912 before February 28th.  So far, we have collected $1,600 and need $1,800 more.  Thank you!

·       It is January and that's typically the time to re-set priorities and begin working toward a successful year.  Our Club is no exception.  We all want the Rotary Club of Appleton to be as vital as it can be.  Think about your friends, colleagues and co-workers who would benefit from being part of this great Club and who have something to add to it.  Our club has a tradition of steady growth every year, and you're encouraged to nominate future Rotarians by March 4th so we can welcome them in the current Rotary year.  If you have any questions, please see Shipra, Curt or Kathy.  Thanks for doing your part to keep our Club strong.
