Meets Tuesday Noon

Radisson Paper Valley

THUMBNAIL:  ROGER BERSCHAUSEN

Roger was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan the youngest of 5 children.  He went to Bowden College in Maine and received his Masters in Divinity at University of ChicagoDivinity School.  Roger came to this area in 1990 when he was called to be the first minister of the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.  This was his first call after the seminary.  Roger and Amy have two children:  Hattie (17) and Ian (14).  His passion in life is connecting people.  Roger helped start Toward Community: Unity in Diversity that also laid the foundation for the Fox Cities Rotary Multicultural Center.  He is also part of “Common Ground”, a group of mostly clergy that come together to help make our community healthy and whole.  Both of Roger’s grandfathers were active Rotarians.

THUMBNAIL:  CHAD HERSHNER

As Chad was preparing for his thumbnail, it gave him the opportunity to reflect back and think about who he is and how his life experiences defined him as a person.  Chad was born 35 years ago in York, Pennsylvania.  His birth parents abandoned him at the age of 6 months and left him with his babysitters for them to raise him.  They were an amazing couple in the mid 60’s that in addition to raising their 2 sons raised 29 other children without any financial assistance.  While in 8th grade, his mother passed away and the arts (playing the saxophone, acting in a play and writing poetry) were vital to his healing process.  At the age of 14, his father was placed in a nursing home and Chad went to Atlanta to live with one of the 28 other kids his father raised.  While in high school, Chad was given a tremendous opportunity.  Under the leadership of 3 fulltime directors, a full-time vocal coach and a full-time choreographer, 60 high school students mounted 11 shows every year.  Chad got to do everything from sing, dance, act, sew costumes, paint sets and sound/lighting design.  Unfortunately, his father passed away and never got the opportunity to see him perform.  Chad and his partner Jeff have been together for almost 4 years and Chad has two children Abigail (7) and Josiah (5).  Chad is the Vice President of Advancement of the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.  Chad’s mother used to tell him to always shoot for the moon, because if you miss the moon, you will still be among the stars.

WAYNE’S HISTORY MINUTE

On July 1, 1915, there were 186 Rotary clubs and 20,700 Rotarians.  The Office of the Secretary of the IARC (International Association of Rotary Clubs), in Chicago, had grown from a “desktop” operation and a part-time job to three rooms and eleven employees.  One of the great decisions in Rotary’s past was to decentralize administration with oversight and policy-making handled in the IARC office.  In 1915, the IARC formed districts.  Districts are headed by a District Governor (DG) who is nominated by the clubs in the District and elected at the RI Annual Convention.  The DG provides “quality control” to assure that RI policies/practices are carried out at the local level and is responsible for growth of Rotary in the District.  The DG presides at the Annual District Assembly (leadership training for all club president and secretary-elects) and the Annual District Conference (to nominate the incoming DG, discuss matters referred by RI and fellowship of all Rotarians and spouses).  The DG-elect is the District’s representative to the International Assembly held prior to the RI Annual Convention.

Tour of Polish Milwaukee and Milwaukee Public Museum’s Body World exhibit, April 17

FOX CITIES ROTARY MULTICULTURALCENTER UPDATE

We now have $15,370 in gifts and pledges committed; we are waiting to hear about final decision and approval on two potential large gifts which would total $6000-$6500.  New gifts over the past two weeks have ranged from $3000 to $50;  $500 or $600 is still the gift amount received most frequently in the campaign.  So, gifts are still needed to close the gap for full payoff of the principal amount:

                        Total goal                      $27,600

Less gifts/pledges          $15,370

                                                            $12,230

Less pending gifts          $  6,500

                                                            $  5,730  yet to raise

 Rotarian gifts/pledges total $3900 through 9 gifts -- and we are very grateful for those!   We have upwards of 20 individual and organization contacts made (outside of Rotary) from whom we have not yet received a yes/no decision on a gift.
