INTRODUCTION TO

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND GREEN JOBS

Doug Stingle, Membership/Outreach Coordinator with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), discussed how their mission is to promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration.  MREA is a non-profit educational organization established in 1990 in Custer, Wisconsin.  Currently, they have about 4,000 members.  Some of their activities include:  The Energy Fair that will be held June 20-22, 2008, the ReNew the Earth Institute, hands-on workshops, Wisconsin Solar Tour and a newsletter.  Efficiency is using less electricity to live the same lifestyle.  For every $1.00 you spend on efficiency you will reduce the cost of your system by $3.00.  Most people can cut their home energy usage by ˝.  There are various renewable technology systems.  Solar electric systems are a collection of solar cells.  There are three types of solar electric systems:  tie to utility without batteries (cost $12,000-18,000), stand alone off grid systems (cost $19,000-22,000) and utility integrates with batteries (cost $24,000-27,000).  Wind power has three different tower types:  guyed lattice, tilt up and free standing.  Solar domestic hot water systems heat homes using a 2 panel system that provides a small family with 75% of their hot water throughout the year.  The system costs about $6,000, lasts about 30 years and the payback on a residential system is 5 years.  Space heating works with radiant floor heating systems or forced air systems.  They are not compatible with baseboard or radiators.   About 85% of our energy comes from petroleum, natural gas, coal and nuclear energy while only 15% is from renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydro electrical).   With the increased use of renewable energy, there will be an increase in manufacturing, research/design, installation, administration, sales, education and marketing jobs.  There are also many people today working on renewable energy such as New North, Midstate Technical College, Blue Green Alliance and the government.  For more information visit www.the-mrea.org.
