AFRICAN ADVENTURE

Twenty-five years ago, Don and Eileen Herrling made their first trip to Kenya with a professional photographer primarily to photograph animals.  In 2007, they revisited Kenya and saw many changes due to political instability (i.e. violence, poverty, lack of jobs, corruption and tribalism).  The presidential election was held on December 27, 2007 where incumbent President Mwai Kibaki won despite Raila Odinga claiming Kibaki stole the election.  More than 1,000 people were killed and 300,000 people displaced after this election.  About 58% of the people in Kenya live on less than $2.00 per day and only 42% have access to clean drinking water.  The literacy rate is about 83%. The life expectancy is about 52 years and 51% of the population is aged under 18.  Kenya is home to about 70 tribes.  The Samburu tribe lives in a group of huts made of branches, mud and dung surrounded by a fence made of thorn bushes.  They still dress and make fire in their traditional style. Visitors pay the chief to come into the village. About 10% of the population of Kenya is Muslims.  There are many greenhouses since about 70% of the flowers are exported - a $360 million industry.  People travel to Kenya because it contains some the last unspoiled wildlife areas in the world.  Kenya is often described as “all of Africa in one country”.  Kenya is located on the equator and has 32 million people with 50 indigenous tribes.  It is best known for its wildlife sanctuaries, game parks and reserves.  When Don and Eileen traveled through Nairobi, the vehicle never stopped and they never got out.  Carjackings and some violence occurred at some of the camps.  While traveling through Kenya, they saw coffee, pineapple and barley fields.  They also photographed many animals and birds:  zebroid (half horse and half zebra), pigmy hippos, impalas, leopards, giraffes, crocodiles, baboons, gazelles, elephants, lions, zebras, white rhinos, cheetahs, wildebeests, white pelicans, eagles among others.  There are over 1,080 species of birds in Kenya.  They traveled by plane to the Masai Mara Game Preserve.  The visitors enjoyed a bush dinner and Masai warriors danced and sang.  The elders make the major decisions for the village.  The plains and mountains of Kenya support a greater diversity of wildlife than anywhere on the African continent.  Hopefully, this natural beauty will continue to survive for future generations.

DISTRICT 6220 CONFERENCE

We look forward to welcoming you to our District Conference here in Marquette, Michigan May 16-18, 2008.  We offer interesting plenary sessions and superior recreational opportunities for your “OFF” time.  Take a tour of beautiful Marquette, do some shopping or take a relaxing walk on our beautiful Lake Superior beaches.  You could play golf, rent a bicycle or visit the National Ski Hall of Fame, Iron Mining museum, Children’s Museum, Maritime Museum and Lighthouse or the Marquette County Historical Museum.

Following the plenary sessions of Friday there will be a Cocktail Hour and an Action Station Dinner (Tastes from Around the World) at Northern Michigan University.  President Les Wong will welcome us all to Northern Michigan University.  The highlight of the evening will be a promised special RYE variety show.

After the plenary sessions of Saturday morning and luncheon you can explore our City.  In the evening put on your “dress-up clothes” for an elegant Governor’s dinner at Northern Michigan University.  This is preceded by a 5 pm Cocktail Hour with elegant music by Luminesse, the entry and Presentation of colors led by the U.S. Coast Guard and a parade of Past District Governors. Our featured speaker for Saturday evening is Sarah Houghton, a former RYE student, who will tell us the background of what, how and why of the Etta Projects and what lies ahead for them.  Dance the remainder of the evening to the lively music of the Westerly Winds Big Band.  Sunday morning will have the Ecumenical and Memorial Service directed by Pastor Ray Connor.  This will be followed with the closing remarks of Stephanie Urchick our Rotary International Representative. Register on the District 6220 website:  http://www.ridistrict6220.org/.
