WALKING

Mark Fenton is a champion walker. From 1986 to 1990, Mark was a member of the United States national racewalking team.  Mark is known for being an advocate for community, environmental and public policy initiatives to encourage more walking and bicycling as well as the health benefits.  The U. S. Surgeon General recommends that every American adult has at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day.  The 30 minutes can be broken up.  About 25% of American adults actually get 30 minutes of physical activity per day through conscious exercise.  There are about 365,000 annual premature deaths attributable to sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition.  There is an epidemic of physical inactivity.  They are now estimating that we could be raising the first generation of kids in America in 100 years to have statistically shorter life expectancies than their parents as a result of sedentary lifestyles.  In the public health community, there is a new campaign to build communities where people are physically active again as part of their daily lives.  When we were younger, most of us walked to school.  Today it is hard to be a “free range” kid.  Mark’s mom kicked him out of the house on Saturday morning and he disappeared with his friends until dinner.  His mom did not worry for a second.  How we build our communities has much to do with whether or not we have “free range” kids.  Developers can build sidewalks and subdivisions and schools can be built back in neighborhoods.  The cost of busing each child to school and the additional costs of children getting type 2 diabetes would then be reduced/eliminated.  There are four elements to find more active places:  neighborhoods that have playgrounds, schools, corner store, churches; a network of facilities that connect them such as sidewalks, pathways and trails; details of site design (how buildings are laid out); and it has to be safe.   You can be a voice of change or change agents for active lifestyles.  We owe it to the next generation to get involved and build communities so that children can live active lifestyles.

(P. S. I did eat that brownie after Mark left but I also did walk that evening.)

REVERSE RAFFLE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

The Reverse Raffle is only 1 week away and we still need to sell 39 tickets.  Without sponsorships, silent auction items and members purchasing tickets, we will be unable to contribute as much money to the five initiatives (Etta Project, the 2007/2008 and the 2008/2009 Every Rotarian Every Year campaign, the Fox Cities Rotary Multicultural Center, SAMP and the Community Service Fund) as intended.  This is our club’s only fundraiser.  The last number drawn will win $3,000 unless the remaining 5 ticket holders decide to split the proceeds.  Please enter FVTC at entrance #10 on the west side of the building.

·       If you have not yet purchased your ticket or if you would like to purchase another, please call Kathy Dreyer at 731-4427 or e-mail her at kdreyer1@juno.com.  Tickets cost $100 and admits 2 adults.

·       We are looking for more corporate/individual sponsors.  Please contact JoEllen Wollangk (734-4352) or Tonya Dedering (735-5695) if you can help.

·       Silent auction items - Please put on your thinking caps and come up with fun, creative and desirable items to tempt your fellow Rotarians and make this year’s event a success.  Need some ideas?  Contact Nancy Johnshoy 224-1401 or any Reverse Raffle Committee member (the folks making the weekly announcements).  Items should be delivered to Nancy Johnshoy at Nicolet National Bank, 900 West College Avenue – just west of the Thompson Community Center.  Brown bag wine sale - If you have an extra bottle of wine or would help by donating one, please contact Nancy Johnshoy.

NOTE:  You can still win the raffle if you do not attend but please make sure that you have a proxy.  When there are 5 tickets left, these ticketholders can choose to split the grand prize ($3,000) or continue on.  It is the responsibility of the proxy to let the remaining ticketholders know if the original ticketholder wants to continue or split the funds.   If a proxy is not designated, it automatically goes on.

RYE STUDENT UPDATE – HALEY DOMNICK

Right now I am more focusing on school and trying to get more involved. I have started to do more work in my classes with my classmates, along with a few tests here and there. I might not get the best scores on the tests but I’m really working hard to get there. And with the help of my friends in school its going well. The truth is I really like going to school here! I love being with my classmates and spending time with them in school.

Another thing I did recently was cook for my family and friends. I cooked them both Sloppy Joes! It has been a while since I ate Sloppy Joes and I loved it. Ha. And my family and friends liked it too, but for them its too sweet with the mix of brown sugar and meat. So it was something different for them. I also plan on making banana bread for them soon because they dont have many foods here that include bananas.

Also the weekend past I went to the countryside that my family here owns. It wasnt much. Cows, horses, grass, and a pond type thing. But it was fun to be out of the city and in the middle of nowhere. Very calm and quiet. So we went and spent the day there, and drank mate and hung out as a family.

I think my Spanish is going very well! I am happy to be able to understand jokes and talk like an Argentino! And everyone says I could pass for an Argentinian! So that must be good! And when I have to speak in English I sometimes dont know how to say some words or it comes out all mixed. It’s kind of crazy!

Ahhh and as its getting warmer for you all up there... its getting quite cold here! So I had to buy a few new sweaters and stuff! Right now its going OK, its in the middle of warm and cold so it’s comfortable, but this week to come its going to get really cold my host mom said! So thats going to be sad.  Well I don’t know what more to say!  And I only have like a month and three weeks left. Not looking forward to saying goodbye!
