INDUCTIONS

Today, the Rotary Club of Appleton inducted Steve Michels and Dan Schetter.  Steve is the Vice President – Commercial Lending at North Shore Bank and Dan is the General Manager of the CopperLeaf Hotel.  Welcome!

CHARLES AND PATRICIA HEETER OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD

Jean Long Manteufel was awarded a Charles and Patricia Heeter Outstanding Community Leadership Award in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of our community, country and the world.  Jean was instrumental in the efforts to provide household items for the Hmong Resettlement.  She not only lead the efforts for the furniture donation drive but secured the use of a 10,000 square foot warehouse. A $1,000 contribution was made to Rotary International in Jean’s name.

THUMBNAIL:  DWIGHT EASTY

Dwight pondered on how to cram 72 years in a 5 minute thumbnail so he deleted the first 21 years.  At the age of 22, Dwight was trying to decide where to go to graduate school – Ohio Wesleyan University or the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton.  Since the woman of his life no longer thought that Dwight was the man in her life, there was no need to stay in Ohio so he moved to Appleton.  Mary Kay changed her mind and they were married in 1958.  Dwight took a job in the East and taught general chemistry for the University of Delaware.  He also taught general and analytical chemistry at Ohio Wesleyan, analytical chemistry at University of Wisconsin Madison, member of the faculty and group leader of analytical chemistry at the Institute of Paper Chemistry, manager of environmental / analytical laboratory for James River in Camas, Washington and James River in Neenah.  During the 7 years Dwight was in Camas, Mary Kay stayed in Wisconsin.    After Dwight’s job was eliminated in Neenah, he began to work part-time for Integrated Paper Services.  For the past 1 ˝ years, he has been volunteering at Affinity Health System so he is not retired physically only monetarily.  Dwight and Mary Kay have three children:  Allen, David and Elizabeth.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

Samantha Bond (Appleton North) attended the RYLA Conference at YMCA Camp Manito-Wish located in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin from May 12-14.  Samantha had a great experience at Camp Manito-Wish.  The conference began with icebreakers so that everyone would get to know and trust each other in her group.  The camp helped her with her fear of speaking in front of a lot of people especially ones she does not know.  She also somewhat conquered her fear of heights by climbing a sequence ladder with a partner.  When Samantha said she could not do it they talked her into saying that she could and she made it.  The only bad thing was getting up at 5:00 a.m. and the day she had to leave.  Samantha expressed her thanks to Rotary for making this happen.

GUESTS, VISITORS AND MAKE-UPS

Guests today were Samantha Bond, Rebecca Quaintance, Mary Kay Easty with Dwight Easty, Dan Neufelder with Mike Hanson, Andrew Mielke with Marlene Mielke, Mito Kudaka with Rick Myers, Sameer Sridhar with Sridhar, Marta Karlov with Jennifer Wanke and Joe Filosi with Marta Weldon.

There were no visiting Rotarians today.
