MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 2001
1. The meeting commenced at 5:30 pm at the Appleton Public Library conference room. Attending were Dave Rothmann, Barb Kelly, Dick Calder, Nancy Johnshoy, Don Sturtevant, Ed Shannon, John Wiley, Donna Kidder, TIm Higgins, Jeff Knezel and Don Herrling.
2. Nancy Johnshoy presented the financial report for the period ended December 31, 2001. Balances in the respective accounts are as follows:
Administrative account - $40,561.28
Blanket account - 901.55
Matching Grant 8802 - 1,607.29
Total $43.070.12
3. Don Herrling, representing the Downtown Appleton World Service Committee, stated that this committee wanted to work with and assist SAMP in whatever ways were appropriate. The WS committee was open to suggestions from SAMP on ways to provide assistance. Jeff Knezel provided an outline of recent activity by SAMP to expand the number of destinations for shipments.
4. Jeff provided an update on the status of an approved shipment to Ulan-Ude, Russia. We are also investigating the possibility of making a shipment to Karachi, Pakistan. Both locations have active Rotary clubs with members willing to receive and be accountable for the distribution of supplies. Cost estimates for shipping are currently being obtained for both locations. The Russia shipment requires significant work to clear Customs and related bureaucratic requirements. Funding has not been obtained as of this date for a shipment to Pakistan.
5. Jeff is taking leadership in an effort to provide volunteer workers to assist Goodwill Industries prepare new warehouse space. Efforts will continue to get a large number of Rotarians to work on Saturday, January 26, 2002 at the new warehouse location. Committee members volunteered to make telephone calls to recruit Appleton Rotary members for this one day event.
6. We currently have 74 packed gaylords ready for shipment. Packing in January should add another 8 - 12 gaylords to this total, more than enough for 40 foot container shipments to both Russia and Pakistan.
7. Jeff thanked Donna Kidder for her work to get publicity about SAMP in the Appleton Post Crescent recently.
8. Correspondence from Julie Bonett, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Rotarian, was reviewed which outlined current information on the unrest and political turmoil in Zimbabwe. They continue to need supplies and stated they felt they could assure delivery to appropriate medical facilities. Jeff was directed to obtain more detailed information on the actions that would be taken to assure proper delivery. Jeff also will contact Rotarians in Malawi and Jamaica (last 3 shipments) to ask for feedback on who received the supplies from those shipments which were made in 2001.
9. The next meeting will be on Monday, February 18, 2002 at the Appleton Public Library lower level conference room. The meeting adjourned at approximately 6:35 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Jeff Knezel, Co-chairperson
