SOUTHERN AFRICA MEDICAL PROJECT
COORDINATING COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2002
1. The meeting commenced at 5:30 pm at the Appleton Public Library conference room. Attending were Dr. Chick Fenlon, Harry Spiegelberg, Barb Kelly, Dick Calder, Jerry Otteson, Don Sturtevant, Lisa Weiner, Don Herrling, Jeff Knezel, and guest Dr. Richard Stoughton.
2. Jeff Knezel presented the financial report for the period ended January 31, 2002. The current balance of the three funds combined (Administrative, Matching Grant, and Blanket) is $43,848.
3. Dr. Richard Stoughton, a retired Family Practice physician from Shawano, WI, spoke to the Committee about moving to Zimbabwe to serve in a mission hospital in an area approximately 100 miles from Harare. Dr. Stoughton made a special trip to Bulawayo to contact local Rotarians and receive an update on the use of medical supplies and equipment shipped there by SAMP. He also made a request that SAMP consider sending supplies to Harare through the auspices of the Dominican Missionary Sisters. Dr. Stoughton provided information on the extreme conditions, AIDS and TB problems, and some background on the political and economic issues .
The Committee members were generally in favor of the possibility of shipping supplies to Harare, but requested Dr. Stoughton to provide more information on contact persons, Customs, distribution capabilities and ability to provide feedback on the use of the supplies and equipment.
4. Jeff updated the status of proposed shipments to Ulan-Ude, Russia and Karachi, Pakistan. Details on arranging for Customs clearance and shipping are still unfinished for the Russian shipment. Also, more information is needed on similar issues for the Pakistan shipment. Funding from Rotary International has been promised for the Pakistan shipment, so should not deplete our cash.
5. Jeff reported that Goodwill Industries is in the process of relocating to upgraded warehouse facilities which is temporarily stopping the pick-up of goods until the new storage space is available. Packing gaylords will continue this month at 854 Airport Road, Menasha, WI on February 26, 2002.
6. Marketing of SAMP still needs to be addressed. We need to change our name to better reflect our revised mission of shipping to other Third World countries than just in Africa. It will be important for someone to volunteer to lead the overall marketing effort.
7. The next meeting will be Monday, March 18, 2002 at 5:30pm at the Appleoton Public Library conference room. The meeting adjourned at approximately 6:50 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Jeff Knezel, Co-chairperson
