January 12, 2005
Appleton Public Library
Present: Joy Schwarz, Pete Gilbert, Elizabeth Timmins, Evan Bend, Gretchen Raab, Judy Owen.
Absent: Erin Czech who is sick today. Sorry to hear it, Erin. Guest: Beth Carpenter
- Call to order
Joy Schwarz called the meeting to order at 2:05.
- Additions to the agenda
Beth Carpenter from OWLS has two points to bring up with our Board. She is also our communicator for point 5. Welcome Beth!
- Minutes of November 11, 2004 Board Meeting
Thanks, Pete, for bailing out Elizabeth the past two board meetings and taking the minutes. No additions to the minutes. Pete Gilbert motioned approval of the November 11, 2004 minutes. Gretchen Raab seconded and the motion carried.
- Treasurer's Report
Pete is in the driver's seat and doing a terrific job as usual. He pointed out that large dues have been entered. Winnefox just paid but is not listed yet. WLA fee has been paid. Also, not yet listed. The report was from 31 Dec 2004. There has been a lot of activity since we toasted in 2005, understandably. Judy Owen motioned approval of the December 31, 2004 Treasurer's Report. Evan Bend seconded and the motion carried.
Old Business
- FVLC/OWLS/WLS bus to ALA Conference exhibits in Chicago
The date of the adventure to Chicago is June 27, 2005. Beth told us that information can be found at http://www.owls.lib.wi.us/alabus2005/. Beth has reserved the coach. The actual cost for the bus is $17.36 per person for 56 people. The registration fee is $10.00 for the bus and will be paid by registrants to OWLS. The remainder of $412.00 for the coach will be divided between the three sponsors. We discussed an April 15th deadline so that we can get a feel for participation by that date. We will also revisit this thought at the March board meeting. The ALA cost for visiting the exhibits is $25.00. Registrants will be informed that they can register for this through ALA on line or register when they get there. FVLC will provide snacks on the bus. Evan reminded us that the F in FVLC also stands for "food."
- Nancy Pearl
We invited Beth Carpenter to "keep going". She shared the VERY EXCITING news that she invited Nancy Pearl to Appleton and she has accepted! Yippee! The workshop will be at the Appleton Public Library on December 8, 2005 and it is entitled, "Readers Advisory with Nancy Pearl." Judy shared some great ideas about how to get teachers involved in the day. We are so lucky to have Judy on our board to bring us the school perspective. We also discussed about perhaps having our FVLC Member meeting that morning and making a day of it! Beth asked FVLC for $500.00 toward Nancy Pearl. The answer was "yes"! We want to be a part of this wonderful professional opportunity!
- Survey Monkey
An annual subscription to Survey Monkey is $200. Beth wanted to know that if FVLC purchased this could FVLC serve as an umbrella and allow members access to Survey Monkey? Pete will research & study. Beth then exited at 2:40. Thanks Beth for coming to our meeting!
- Education Grants
We would like to allocate another $60 of our budget toward Education Grants. Elizabeth Timmins made the motion and Judy Own seconded it. The motion carried.
- Online Survey
Joy passed out paper samples of a survey that she created for school librarians and specialty librarians in FVLC. We agreed that we have some questions for our next board meeting about which schools are members and how does it work when they are part of a larger district? Also, how is it working for private schools in our domain?
The survey will be posted for the month of February, 2005 and a reminder will be sent around Valentine's Day about completing it.
Evan will assist Joy with addresses for the survey to be sent to. We edited the survey together. We eliminated questions 14 & 17. We changed questions 5 & 15. We really like the links within the survey to the Online Membership Directory and the FVLC Volunteer Opportunities Form. Great job Joy! As of this writing, Joy had made all the changes and emailed us the finalized survey. Enjoy your well-deserved vacation in the sun, Joy!
- Update on invoicing for 2005 membership dues
Covered under point 4.
New Business:
Judy departed at 3:15. Budget and Nominating Committee topics were deferred by Joy to the March, 2005 meeting.
- Updates
Evan said there have been about 50 updates on the Directory. He will make it clearer that members can edit and he would like to make the password clearer. The blogging program on December 10th went well. The FVLC blog is going well. Thanks, Gretchen, for having your library host the program!
- Set the date for our next Board meeting
We will meet on Monday, March 7th at OWLS at 1:30 p.m.
- Adjournment
Joy made a motion to adjourn at 3:20. Evan seconded.
Respectfully Submitted By,
Elizabeth ("for those about to rock, we salute you") Timmins
