May 27, 2005

Fond du Lac Public Library

  1. Call to Order
Joy Schwarz, President, called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. at the Fond du Lac Public Library. Joy thanked the Fond du Lac Library for hosting and thanked everyone for coming on the Friday prior to a three day weekend.

Introductions were made of all guests.

Mark Arend of the programming committee announced 2005-2006 program dates with the disclaimer that dates are tentative subject to speaker availability. The dates are Friday, October 21; Friday, December 2; Friday, March 17; and Friday, May 19.

Mark also took this opportunity to speak about the state budget and library systems and what the issues are.

  2. Approval of minutes.
Copies of the minutes were distributed. Craig Lahm made a motion to accept the May 14, 2004 annual meeting minutes. Pete Gilbert seconded. The motion was carried.
  3. Approval of minutes.
Pete Gilbert made a motion to accept the December 10, 2004 general meeting minutes. Erin Czech seconded. The motion was carried.
  4. Financial Stuff

    1. Approval of the Treasurer's Report.
The only clarification made by the treasurer, Pete Gilbert, was that scholarships were given to school librarians to attend WEMA. Craig Lahm moved that we approve the Treasurer's Report. Gretchen Raab seconded. Motion carried. Thanks Pedro!
    2. Adoption of the 2005-2006 budget.
Pete Gilbert gave the Budget Report. We have substantial reserves. Pete explained that billing of dues will change in the future. A lot of work was put into this issue by Evan Bend. Thanks Evan! We will be simply billing school districts in the future. All librarians within a paid school district would be members by default. The programming line refers to special projects such as this year's bus to ALA in Chicago (6.27) and this year's co-sponsoring of Nancy Pearl in Appleton (12.8) The advocacy line refers to a contribution to the WLA Foundation. Rick Krumwiede, who is the President of WLAF, said that this campaign is collecting seed money for statewide advocacy for Wisconsin libraries. We are trying to overcome the indifference to libraries by decision makers. Thanks, Rick! Rick Krumwiede moved that we adopt the budget as proposed. Craig Lahm seconded. The motion was carried. Thanks Pedro!
  5. President's Report
Joy re-introduced the board members and thanked them for serving this year. She did a review of the year. FVLC had been updating and maintaining its website; maintaining a member database; conducted an on-line survey of school librarians and special librarians; continued offering courtesy cards, ILLs, and insurance. FVLC also continued it mission of providing opportunities for networking, communicating, and continuing education. The ALA trip has 48 spots taken and 6 spots open. Education grants increased this year. We had 4 outstanding educational programs this year:
  6. Summary of school and special libraries on-line survey
Joy briefly summarized the results of the survey. We know that school librarians and special librarians have pressing professional scheduling concerns. We also know that school librarians and special librarians are aware of FVLC and some have been more active with FVLC in the past. It is up to us to take these survey results as guidelines for future activities.

The floor was yielded to the incoming president, Erin Czech.

  7. Adoption of 2005-2006 plan
Erin reviewed the proposed 2004-2005 Annual Plan. We have been making great progress and we have a doable plan. Rick Krumwiede moved to accept the 2005-2006 plan, and Beth Carpenter seconded. The motion carried.
  8. Election of 2005-2006 officers and directors
Vice President/President-Elect Erin Czech will automatically become the new President.

The following slate of candidates was presented for election:

Craig Lahm moved that the slate be accepted. Rick Krumwiede seconded. All were elected. Welcome aboard Desiree! And that's Gretchen for taking vice-presidency!

  9. Any other business
Erin Czech let us know that it was National Ancestors Day. She said she will honor the ancestors in the office of the presidency through her tenure. Erin looks forward to another year of fun!

Beth Carpenter said that Nancy Pearl will be visiting OWLS on Dec. 8 (all day!) and thanked FVLC for financially supporting this opportunity. To learn more, go to the OWLS webpage and click on "continuing education."

Pete moved that we thank Joy for all her hard work. There was thunderous applause!

  10. Adjournment
Mark Arend made a motion for adjournment and Craig Lahm seconded.

The motion carried at 10:40 a.m. Following the meeting, James Baughman, Director of the UW-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication, discussed "The Irony of the Information Age: How Much Do We Really Know (or Care)?" (and he rocked!!)

Respectfully Submitted,
Elizabeth ("These are the days you'll remember when May is rushing over you with desire") Timmins
