Drum Circle & Reggae
Program
Details
This is an improvisational drum circle that is open to all who
wish to participate,
regardless of age or skill level. It is an opportunity for us
to express ourselves through
rhythm and sound, to share in the magic of drumming together as
a community,
and most of all, to enjoy the journey together!
Some
drum circle etiquette and guidelines…
No drum? No problem
– Some drummers bring extra instruments that they’re
happy to share in the circle. Instruments that are placed
toward the center of the
circle are being offered by circle members for others to play.
A drum that is kept
beside its owner is NOT being offered. There are many good
reasons for this; drums
can be expensive, fragile, rare, or simply considered very
personal to their owners.
Be gentle, pass it on
- When playing someone else’s instrument, treat it as
you hopefully would the person it belongs to – gently and
respectfully.
Also,
consider returning it to the center of the circle once you’ve
had a chance to
play it. Remember, it’s there to be shared.
Watches,
rings, and shiny things
- Wearing hand jewelry while drumming can
damage both the drum and the jewelry, and so you may wish to
consider
removing any hand jewelry before playing your hand drum. And
unless
otherwise permitted by the owner, please always remove
any hand
jewelry before playing someone else's hand drum.
Listening
- It is very important is that the drummers listen to each
other.
If you can’t hear the drummers beside you, you’re probably
playing too loudly.
Be creative… and keep the beat
- Anyone may begin a rhythm, and everyone
in the circle should have the opportunity to do that. Once a
rhythm has
been started, the rest of the drumming should support and
complement
the groove through the duration of that piece.
Our pint-size drummers
- Children are welcome but are the responsibility
of their parent(s) or guardian. Children, like adults, must
also be respectful
of other drummers and their instruments. Parents and guardians
– This is a
great opportunity for you and your child to explore drumming
together.
Enjoy!
