Vision Statement…
Harmony Café values all people and helps to lead the creation of
a better community where:
The
arts & culture are accessible and vital;
All people
realize their unique gifts and leadership potential;
Ideas are exchanged freely and people learn, grow and are
challenged;
The Check it at
the Door Declaration inspires us all to create safe spaces
here and throughout our community.
What
we did in 2007…
CELEBRATING ARTS & CULTURE:
Free, eclectic,
all-ages live music every week in genres ranging
from jazz to electronica, Celtic to country, hip hop to punk.
Musicians came from Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Maryland, New
York, California, and all over Wisconsin and donated their time
and talents.
Bi-monthly
art shows ranging from elementary students to
professionals, including exhibits to raise awareness and funding
for Kenyan children with AIDS and national and international
adoption.
Monthly
poetry readings and also an 80 person poetry slam with a
local middle school.
The only
all-ages, all-talents weekly open mic in the Fox
Valley, averaging over 50 people each week.
Multiple
book clubs.
A variety of
all-ages celebrations, benefit fundraisers, carnivals and
holiday parties.

DEVELOPING LEADERS
The GLBT
Partnership, providing the only community-based support
and leadership development group for youth ages 14-18 who
identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. The GLBT
Partnership has served over 100 different Fox Valley youth in
2007.
Providing
vocational training and job placement through the Harmony
Corps program – helping dozens of people learn job
skills and better their lives.
Offering
and supporting a number of community-based programs such
as the NAMI Teen Mental Health Support Group, Parent’s Night Out
(for kids with autism and their parents), the Tough Love Parents
Support Group, The Positive Voice Transgender Transformation
group, Yoga Circle, the Blind & Visually Impaired Young Adult
Support Group, Chess Club and La Leche League.
Etcetera, a
weekly group that provides support and leadership development
for young adults
ages 18-25 who identify as LGBT.
PROMOTING EDUCATION & CIVIL DIALOGUE
Monthly
Conversation Café programs, offering small group
discussion circles on challenging topics in a respectful way to
promote growth, understanding and civil dialogue.
Monthly
Issue Forums and PROactive CONversations (PRO/CON’s) on
a variety of topics such as: Immigration, Democracy, the Iraq
War, Day of Silence/Night of Noise, Religion, Health Care,
Darfur, Health Care, Child Soldiers in Africa, The History of
the Birth Control Movement, Outagamie County Executive
Candidates debate, Appleton City Council Meet & Greet, Adoption
Awareness, Composting and Mental Illnesses.
Supporting
coalitions such as Aware Fox Cities and the Youth Worker
Coalition and serving as an active partner within the
Fox Cities Rotary Multicultural Center to help raise
awareness and understanding in our community.
Promoting
Green Living with compostable food & drink service
products, initiatives to reduce paper consumption, discounts for
customers who make green choices, fair trade organic coffee and
more.

CREATING SAFE SPACE & COMMUNITY
Continually
educating the community and ourselves about the Check it
at the Door Declaration, and challenging ourselves and
others to live up to these ideals.
Offering a
safe, welcoming, all-ages, alcohol and drug-free drop-in
space six days/70-80 hours a week for thousands of
community members who need or appreciate our supportive,
respectful environment that is physically, mentally and
emotionally a safe space for people of all backgrounds.
