Harmony Corps


Program Details
 

Harmony Corps is a program of Harmony Café, and Harmony Café is a program of Goodwill Industries NCW. Harmony Corps is a short-term vocational training and job placement program which includes community outreach, in-depth vocational evaluation, action plan development, referral services, work experience with vocational training, job development, job placement, and follow-up services.

 

Harmony Corps is meant as a temporary job opportunity for people who have significant barriers to employment. By choosing to participate in this program, Harmony Corps participants will actively find ways to improve their employability, and will work to get a new job in the community within 4 months. 

 

 

Eligibility Determination
 

To be eligible for Harmony Corps, one must:

Be 16 years old or older;

Be a resident of the City of Appleton

Be unemployed (or severely underemployed)

Have significant barriers to independently obtaining and maintaining employment;

Be motivated to working with a program designed to help people overcome barriers to employment, and motivated to obtain competitive community employment;

Be willing to work within the Goodwill NCW and Harmony Café Team, and live by Goodwill NCW values and Harmony Café expectations.

 

In addition, to be eligible for Harmony Corps, one must have struggles in two or more of the following areas:

Education (no high school diploma)

Extremely low income at or below poverty level

Poor or no work history

Difficulty finding and/or maintaining employment

  Physical or mental health problems interfering with ability to work

 Alcohol or drug abuse problems

Criminal history affecting ability to obtain work

   Poor housing situation (homeless, flopping in someone else’s house, etc.)

 Transportation limitations

  Needing help with hygiene, personal appearance, work-appropriate attire, etc.

Needing help with social skills, anger management, communication skills, etc. to keep a job

Referral from another non-profit organization

 



 

Street outreach
reaching out to the people hanging on the streets,
building relationships, assessing their situations and investing in their lives. 

Comprehensive assessment and plan development
which includes an assessment of all areas of a person’s life, such as education,
work history, drug and alcohol use, daily living skills, etc. as well as the creation of individualized
short and long-term goals.

Referral
helping people engage or re-engage with the wealth of services available in our community. 

Job training and employment readiness
(the center piece of the Harmony Corps program)
we’ve created paid positions within Harmony Café where individuals can gain valuable
work experience in a supportive yet challenging work environment.  The program participants
learn vital skills to help them find long-term employment in the community.

Job placement
eaching the Harmony Corps participants skills and giving them resources that
will lead to competitive jobs out in the broader community, and getting these young folks
off the streets.  All of the Harmony Corps members participate in a weekly job club meeting
at Harmony Café where they learn interviewing and resume creation skills, interpersonal skills,
team-building activities, workforce diversity training, appropriate work behaviors, etc.

Donations needed
Gift Certificates and small fun prizes for group activities.
Household items for participants looking into living on their own.
Clothing for participants who are lacking workplace appropriate attire.

**All donations will be kept confidential, unless otherwise specified. To make a donation
please contact, Raymond Carreira III, Harmony Corps Program Coordinator.


Volunteer Opportunities
Mentors and tutors for the program participants, guest speakers, members for the advisory
committee, and community members who would like to do a collaborative work environment effort.
