Parent’s Night
Out
(Autism Support)
Program Details
Parent’s Night Out is
a collaborative venture between Harmony Café, Beyond Boundaries
of
Autism (BBA), and the Autism Society of Wisconsin (ASW).
Structured activities are provided for
children with autism next door at the Fox Cities Rotary
Multicultural Center, while parents and
other family members gather in the Harmony Café for a “night
out” – complete with free food and
drinks of their choice, live music and time to hang out and talk
with other parents. For many of the
parents, this is a rare opportunity to have some social time
without having to care for or worry about their children.
Some quotes from parent’s who’ve attended:
“I can not say enough good stuff about the night out for
parents. We have a terrible time finding anyone
to watch the boys. To be able to relax and know they were fine
is a great thing. It is nice to talk with folks
who really understand what your problems are and learn from
their experiences. If nothing else you find
perhaps you don't have it so bad after all.”
“I wish to express my deepest appreciation for allowing our
family to participate in the Parents
Night Out activity that serves a much needed required downtime
from our three autistic children
who can otherwise be very stressful to our household with the
constant demands that are made by our
children. When we come to this event, we always feel right at
home with the warmest of welcomes that
come from everyone… I love the fact that you have prepared a
safe environment for our children to play
in by providing activities with your staff, while my wife and I
enjoy the great company of other parents
who are just as glad to participate in such stimulating adult
conversations. Please let it be known
to those who have not experienced a life with having a disabled
child that it requires so much more
attention than most people care to put forth in a day. This
attention definitely takes away from the
precious alone time that each parent needs away from the
continuous demands of these children.
