Early Fur Traders

 

These are some entries from the historical logs of Mackinac.   They reflect some of the fur traders that traveled the Fox River in the 1750's

1751 June 1: A permit from the Governor of the Jonquiere to Jean Baptiste Poirier to depart Montreal, Quebec, with one canoe and a crew of six men to render to the Post of La Baie des Puants (Green Bay), New France (Wisconsin). Prohibition to make treaty elsewhere than the Post and its dependencies. The role of the engages of the canoe: (II)-Joseph Poirier also LaFleur (born 1711), of I'Ile Perrot; Joachim Raymond, of La Pointe Claire; (III)-Olivier Garahan (?) of Saint Anne, Montreal, Quebec, (alias Garao, Garau, Garneau, Gavahau, Ganahau, Garaheau, Gaspe? Coline de Carillon and Perrin de Louargat born 1706 at Bout de I'IIe, Montreal, Quebec); (III)-Michael Raymond (born 1743?), of Saint Genevieve; (III)-Jacques (Jean Baptiste) Brouillard (born 1721), of St. Michel d'YaMaska; Joseph Toulouse, of Montreal, Quebec.

1756 October 6: Bout de I'll, Montreal, birth, Pierre Brouillard, Metis, son, Pierre Joseph Brouillard, b-1719 and (IV)-Therese Amable Menard, Metis b-1737

1754 September 9: Bout de I'll, Montreal, birth, Therese Amable Brouillard, Metis daughter Pierre Joseph Brouillard, b-1719 and (IV)-Therese Amable Menard, Metis b-1737

1737August 25: Longueuil, Quebec, birth (IV)-Therese Amable Menard, Metis, daughter (III)-Louis Menard, dit Lafontaine et Montour, Metis, b-1697 and (III)-Francoise Robidou, b-1707; married May 14, 1753 au Bout de I'lle, Montreal, Pierre Joseph Brouillard.

1782 February 11: Assumption de la Pointe de Montreal du Detroit (Essex, Ontario), marriage, Le Sieur Antoine Soumande son Francois Soumande of Varenne, Quebec and the late Charlotte de Varenne; married Reine Angelique Guiet dit Tourangeau daughter Jean Baptiste Guyet dit Tourangeau and Marie Josephine Pilotte: witness Joseph Brouillard, Joseph Bondy, Jean Baptiste Guyet, Georges Nexe and Baptiste Dufour.

Dullhut or as we now spell it Du Luth was in charge of the French fort in Green Bay (La Baye) in the 1680's since Charles Brouillard died and his wife remarried to Bernadin Cantara Dit Des Lauriers a soldier that reported to Du Luth it is possible that Jean-Baptiste Brouillard may have been introduced to Green Bay by his stepfather who married Petronille Danis in 1696 Jean-Baptiste Brouillard was born in 1687.
