Pulp grinding patents
These are images of the patents for a wood pulp grinder developed in Kaukauna by Col H. A. Frambach. These grinders were in use in 1878 at the Eagle paper Mill in Kaukauna based on a clipping from the Oshkosh newspaper that a Grind stone exploded when the machine was started up. It is believed that the first use of this method of converting wood into wood pulp to make paper was being used in 1877 or 1878. Henry Frambach was a resident of Menasha between 1877-1879. Henry was working closely with his brother John Stoveken who was the owner of the Eagle Mill at that time. Prior to these patents, John Stoveken was making paper from Straw at the same facility. Straw was being delivered to the Paper mill by local farmers. It is uncertain who actually developed the machine; John or Henry, however Henry Frambach applied for and received the Patents.
