What is Afterschool Programming?

Daily, comprehensive youth development programming for

youth ages 6 to 18 during non-school time.  The terms

“school-age care”, “out-of-school time”, and “expanded learning opportunities” are used interchangeably with the term afterschool.

Why Afterschool Programming?

Afterschool fosters success in school.  Regular participation in high-quality afterschool programs is linked to significant gains in standardized tests scores, improved grades and is a key strategy in helping bridge the “academic achievement gap” for low-income and ethnic minority youth.

Studies reveal that ethnic minority youth and children from low-income families gain the most ground when they have access to high-quality afterschool time experiences (WisKids Count).

Why Afterschool Programming?

Afterschool programs prevent risky behaviors that impede academic progress:

Avoidance of drug and alcohol use

                                                                    Decreased delinquency and violent behavior

Increased knowledge of safe sex and avoidance of sexual                                                                     activity and pregnancy

Increased skills for coping with peer pressure
