Biography

Al grew up in the Appalachian mountain area of central Pennsylvania. He holds B.S. and M. S. degrees from Penn State in Wood Science and Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Paper and Fiber Physics in 1979.


After retiring from Fort James Corp. (now Georgia-Pacific Corp.), where he was a Research Leader in Fiber R&D, Al started Buttonwood Consulting, LLC and WOMP, LLC, a joint venture with Dave Hillman, a market pulp consultant. He is co-author of a book, "The World of Market Pulp", published in 2004.


Al is a member of TAPPI, PAPTAC, AAAS, and the World Future Society. He serves on the boards of the Northeast Wisconsin Chapter of the Wisconsin Innovation Network, Lakes States TAPPI, and the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame.  He is an active member of Appleton’s Downtown Rotary and the play reading group, One-Nighters.  

Al's wife, Christina, is a Corporate Art Consultant, and they have two children and a grandson.
