Then, Now, and What's Next

When Rev. Morgan felt guided by Spirit to offer his resignation two months ago, our Unity Church found itself faced with some new challenges and opportunities.

The first challenge was to deal with the loss of our minister. Many people were sad or upset by him leaving. We have been talking about those feelings together at our Town Meetings, and we're slowly moving through the natural feelings of loss and grief at his departure.

The second challenge was to carry on our current church activites. Thankfully, with our Licensed Unity Teacher April Kain-Breese as our Spiritual Leader and other volunteers stepping forward, we are able to maintain our regular schedule of Sunday services, provide spiritual support and counseling, and continue nearly all of our usual activities.

The third challenge (and here is where the word "opportunity" is equally appropriate) has to do with what's next. What's ahead for Unity Church?

Your Board of Trustees is deliberately avoiding the easy answers to that question. Instead, over a series of three Town Meetings in December, January, and February, we're engaging in a process of transition to help the church identify how to get where it wants to go. The options in front of us are:
  1. Hire a new minister without doing any transitional work.

  2. Hire a transitional minister to help us work through issues associated with change, then hire a new minister.

  3. Use a transitional consultant to help us work through those issues while April continues as our Spiritual Leader, then hire a new minister.

  4. Have our own church leaders move us through our transition, perhaps using the Appreciative Inquiry process, before hiring a new minister.
During our transitional process, have April continue as our Spiritual Leader and join the Unity Field Minister Training Program, which will result in her becoming a Unity Minister in about four years.

We'll be discussing these options at our Town Meeting on December 9. Meanwhile, we hope you consider them carefully, talk them over with other members of the congregation, and pray about them.

There are good things ahead for Unity Church!

Love and light,

Albert Bellg
