Make What We Want

Unity is sometimes described as a movement that, while having its own distinct identity, respects everyone’s spiritual path. We often say, “Take what you want from Unity, and leave the rest.”

That’s not such bad advice for the new year as well. “Take what you want from 2008, and leave the rest.” What a difference it would make to leave all our obligations, apprehensions, and distractions behind, and take what we want from the beautiful and dynamic tradition that is Unity.

There’s another word besides “take” that’s appropriate here, too: “Make.” What do we want to make of 2008? Unity’s gift for us in the coming year is a most precious one: the opportunity to recreate our church and our church activities with the guidance of the Christ spirit. For me, and I hope for you, too, there is comfort in knowing that as we do our best to act from the spirit, we can have confidence in the direction we take.

So in 2008, let’s “Make what we want from Unity, and leave the rest.” I look forward to our Town Meetings in 2008 and our individual conversations where we can talk about our future together.
