Want to learn more about geology? Join the club!
The Weis'n'Miners Geology Club, that is. This club is sponsored by the Weis Museum, and is for everyone interested in minerals, fossils, lapidary & jewelry-making, geology, archaeology, gems, metaphysics, and mining.
Everyone is welcome — singles, couples, families, young & old — and all levels of knowledge. First organized in 2007, the Weis'n'Miners Club has already become the largest geology club in Wisconsin.
Club meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm. We usually meet in the Emeritus Room at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley campus — just down the hall from the Museum.
Most meetings have a speaker or demonstration, time for specimen show-and-tell or identification, and door prizes, especially for our younger members. Meetings typically end about 8 pm, but you can stay later and socialize with club members and museum staff. Parking is free.
Some of our past meetings included presentations on wire-wrapping jewelry, Wisconsin fossils, mammoths and archaeology, gem faceting, gold, prospecting in Colorado, and copper mines of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
As a club member, you'll go on great field trips, expand your knowledge, make new friends, learn about old rocks, and have a great time! Some of our past field trips took club members to Michigan's Copper Country to collect minerals, to quarries in northeastern Wisconsin to collect fossils, to visit Earthaven Museum, to collect agates in a gravel pit, and quartz crystals in the forest.
Membership is only $10 per year for singles, or $15 for families.
