Wisconsin Symphonic Winds will present a program entitled “American Heroes” on Monday June 13th at 7:30 pm. in the Music Hall of the Arts and Communications Center at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. The ensemble is made up of more than fifty musicians and is in its eighth season, performing a handful of concerts each summer.
As this concert falls between Memorial Day and the 4th of July, the program features music with a patriotic flavor that celebrates heroes from various facets of American life. Composer Aaron Copland is an American musical hero and his "Outdoor Overture" will be performed. John Williams is a musical hero of film composition and the group will play an arrangement of his music that includes themes from "E.T," "Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone," and "Star Wars." The sport of baseball has provided many sporting heroes and Jack Stamp's "Pastime" is a clever and fun arrangement based on "Take Me Out To the Ballgame."
The second half of the concert features music that celebrates American military heroes. Included will be William Schuman's setting of "Chester" - a tune born in the time of the American Revolutionary War. Amongst the melodies featured in Jerry Bilik's "American Civil War Fantasy" are: "Listen to the Mockingbird," "Camptown Races," "Battle Cry of Freedom," and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Douglas Wagner's moving tribute based on the hymns of the United States armed forces "To Reap the Blessings of Freedom" will be followed by Henry Fillmore's "American's We."
